Tasmania is experiencing great days in terms of growth. The opportunities in front of us are bigger than ever.

“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:4–5)

Jesus said these words to professional fisherman – men with skill and experience – but it was their recent experience that had diminished their passion and will to go again.

We’re in ministry because we’re passionate about seeing people find hope and purpose in Jesus. We have skill and experience but so often it’s our recent or not so recent experiences that dampen our passion. It was Peter’s willingness to trust and take a step of faith that saw the miracle as he launched again into the deep.

Let’s launch or, in some cases, go again. Let’s be led by faith and our calling in Christ. Launch into the deep – our best catch isn’t far away!

Ps Wayne Alcorn

Wayne Alcorn is the National President of the Australian Christian Churches, representing over 1,000 pentecostal churches across Australia with a constituency base of over 300,000 people. Wayne and his wife, Lyn, pastor the multi-campus Hope Centre church in south-east Queensland, which has a long history of a strong community presence in the Brisbane region.

Wayne has over thirty five years experience in Christian ministry, starting off teaching religious education in high schools and going on to become an influential leader in youth ministry in Australia for 18 years.  Taking on the role of national director of Youth Alive Australia in 1992, over the next decade he became one of the nation’s foremost Christian communicators to the emerging generations.

His strong leadership abilities saw him elected to State and National leadership roles within the ACC movement, including that of State President for Queensland, and elected to the office of National President in 2009.

Wayne believes that the Church in the 21st century has a significant and relevant role in today’s society, and he continues to be committed to raising up and investing into the lives of emerging leaders, and effective community transformation programs through the Church.

Working With Children Check

The Department of Justice has been implementing The Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 (the Act) which requires people who work closely with children in certain activities to be registered.

The implementation of the Act is being phased in to different sectors, with the Child Care Services being first. The cost for the Working with Children Check (the Check) will be $17.76 for volunteers.

The associations (which includes churches) is due to commence on 1 October 2014 until 31 March 2015, with mandatory registration from 1 April 2015.

As part of the initial process, the Department of Justice is offering a number of free seminars to help people to understand the new requirements and the Check.

The seminars will include information on:

  • how the Check differs to any previous screening process
  • who will and won’t need a Check
  • how to get a Check
  • what is checked
  • how a clearance may be verified
  • the timeline for change
  • questions regarding the process
